Recently, I have attended a really fun Bollywood night. Every month, I take Bhangra dancing classes. Even though some of my friends think it funny and not as active as gym or Zumba, for instance; however, I find these classes very energizing, fun and a very enjoyable experience.
The reason I started taking these classes is that I love Bollywood movies, their songs and dancing. In fact, not only do I enjoy Indian movies, I also love their spicy food and sparkly bright coloured costumes! So I wanted to be able to learn to dance if not as well as the heroines in the movies, at least it would make me feel part of it.
So, after every 5 week course, teachers and choreographers from my class organize special Bollywood nights, where students can perform what they have learned during classes, socialize and dance to Bollywood music.
All of the performing students are not professionals and some of them are not really gifted in dancing; however, anyone from the Bhangra course can participate in these dance shows. We are taught different steps for several Bollywood songs and then put them together into a medley. Choreography is slightly advanced and the music is fast paced, as most Bhangra music is, nonetheless, the purpose of these shows is simply to have fun, enjoy and dance :) ! I love these Bollywood evenings, as it makes you feel as if you are in a Bollywood movie, people dress up in beautiful Indian attire, performers in dazzling costumes all surrounded by Bollywood tunes. Plus such events also give motivation for attending classes, not that if there were not any shows I would not attend.
Anyways, we meet up outside our class times and practice and socialize as well. Then we discuss and order specific costumes for the dance, sometimes there is even a particular theme.
For the one I attended this week, the theme was red, gold and black. Men would be in black Indian attire and ladies in red and gold, which are considered festive colours in India.
For this occasion I curled my hair, as there is not much I can do with my short cut. All girls ordered same red kurta with gold and black embroidery at the front. I wore mine with black skinny jeans.
In the photo below, you can see my elaborate green and golden eye make-up. I normally wear a lot of eye make-up, so for such occasions I like to create something even more dazzling and creative, using green and black eyeliners, sparkly powders and green and golden shadows. I went for green colour for my eye make-up, since black would have been too strong, red does not suit me and golden was just too easy for me...:)
Then, I accessorized my look with golden and black bangles. I have also included some green coloured bangles, since even though the colour palette was black, red and gold, I thought some contrast will add a nice edge to my entire look. Thus, I also painted my nails in sparkly green, otherwise there would have been too much red and gold.
Then, I found these gorgeous big earrings in green and gold. Unfortunately my camera did not capture the beauty of this jewelry piece; however it did coordinate lovely with my look, adding that contrast of green that I wanted. On my fingers, I just wore simple golden rings.
In my hair I wore a sparkly head band to create some volume in my hair. I could not really wear anything elaborate, because of dancing :) Finally, I put a green Bindi on my forehead :) and with that my Bhangra costume was complete.
Here are some shots of me in action :).
I would not say I am Katrina Kaif or Kareena Kapoor (famous Bollywood actresses) when I dance, but even if I make accidental mistakes, no one notices because of loud Bollywood music, dazzling costumes and cheerful smiles!!!
Lovely outfit! Very Bollywood-ish! Love those green earrings!
